Pittsburgh Steelers Part Ways with Russell Wilson, Confirming His Exit…
The Pittsburgh Steelers are not interested in bringing back Russell Wilson after his one-year stint with the team. Dejan Kovacevic of DK Pittsburgh Sports reports that the team has moved on, and the narrative about a “riff” between Wilson and Arthur Smith was not entirely true.
Kovacevic stated bluntly, “Russell Wilson is not wanted by the Steelers,” adding, “at all.”
He also clarified that the story of Wilson and Smith clashing because Smith stopped letting Wilson call plays is inaccurate. The narrative was reportedly crafted by Wilson’s PR team and agency to paint his struggles in a more favorable light.
According to Kovacevic, what really happened is that Wilson wasn’t following the play calls, held the ball too long, and could no longer evade defenders in the backfield, as anyone could clearly see.
Sources close to the team have told Steelers On SI that they intend for Justin Fields to be their starting quarterback in 2025, allowing Wilson to walk. However, the revelation that the downfall between Wilson and Smith wasn’t as previously believed adds another layer of concern.
Despite some conflicting reports about Wilson’s future with Pittsburgh—some claiming the team has shown interest in his return and Wilson mentioning contract talks on the Pat McAfee Show—those reports aren’t entirely accurate.
It now seems unlikely that the Steelers will reunite with Wilson in 2025. While Fields’ return isn’t guaranteed, the team is likely to either stick with him or look for a new quarterback. The Steelers are aware of the issues from 2024 and seem determined not to repeat them in the upcoming season.
