The New York Mets are aware that securing Pete Alonso is not guaranteed. As talks progress, reports reveal that Alonso and his agent, Scott Boras, rejected the Mets’ latest offer of three years for $70 million. Sources suggest that the Toronto Blue Jays are still in the running and could potentially surpass the Mets’ offer. If Alonso moves to the Blue Jays or another unknown team, the Mets might consider trading for a first baseman with experience in the National League East. Rhys Hoskins, who spent the last two years in Milwaukee but only played one season due to missing 2023, could be a target. Before that, he had six seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and is familiar with the environment at Citi Field. In 2024, Hoskins struggled with a .214 batting average, but still managed 26 home runs and 82 RBIs, which would have ranked him fourth in both categories for the Mets last year. A potential trade scenario could involve the Mets acquiring Hoskins, with the Brewers receiving Brett Baty and RHP Dom Hamel. Hoskins, who is set to make $18 million in 2025, has a mutual $18 million option for 2026, after which he will become a free agent. Unless he struggles again like in 2024, the Mets would likely pick up the option. The Brewers would get Baty, who hit .229 with four home runs and 16 RBIs in limited MLB action in 2024, and Hamel, a promising pitcher with a 6.79 ERA in 27 starts for Triple-A Syracuse in 2024. If the Mets miss out on Alonso, a trade for Hoskins could be their best chance to bring in an external player.
