During an unpredictable season, the Washington Commanders advanced to the NFC Championship game but lost to the Philadelphia Eagles, a division opponent.
Jayden Daniels of LSU was selected No. 2 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, and he directed the offense like a seasoned veteran, which contributed to the season’s success.
Unfortunately, the Heisman Trophy winner’s rushing numbers were just as remarkable as his passing ones. With 148 carries for 891 yards and six touchdowns, Daniels led the club on the ground.
You don’t want your young quarterback to lead the team in that, so I say regrettably. This suggests that there is room for improvement in the running game.
With 187 carries for 799 yards and eight touchdowns, Bijan Robinson was the most productive running back in the previous season.
The Commanders may want a running back in a draft-day trade next week, according to at least one writer, since Ian Valentino of The 33rd Team lists Washington as one of three “best fits.”
“Running backs are coming back into style, but there’s no question that heads turned when it was reported James Cook wants $15 million a season on his first post-rookie contract,” writes Valentino. “Cook has grown into a dynamic playmaker who fits Joe Brady’s offensive plan and plays well with Josh Allen.
“However, as nice as it is to have a back average 4.9 yards per carry and score 16 rushing touchdowns in 2024, the Bills will be hard-pressed to pay Cook.”
Valentino goes on to say that Daniels and Cook get along well because of Cook’s effectiveness as a workhorse.
