The Philadelphia Eagles have a history of rewarding their top players with generous contract extensions, and their latest deal is no exception. On Monday evening, the team announced that they had extended All-Pro right tackle Lane Johnson through the next two seasons, keeping him with the team until 2027. The revised contract adds $8 million over the next two years, along with $30 million in additional guarantees. Johnson will earn $48 million over the next two years, with $40 million of that guaranteed. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the details of the deal.
Extending Johnson was an easy decision for the Eagles. He has shown no signs of slowing down and remains one of the top right tackles in the league, a player other teams would love to have. However, his age—34—does raise questions about the future. Johnson’s consistent performance has allowed the Eagles to delay finding his replacement, but with other aging stars like future Hall-of-Fame center Jason Kelce, Philadelphia addressed his successor early, bringing in Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens to ensure a smooth transition.
The Eagles are now facing the same challenge with Johnson. While it’s difficult to plan for a replacement when the veteran is still performing at such a high level, they know they must eventually prepare for the future. This is a concern that many Eagles fans share, particularly given the team’s below .500 record without Johnson on the field. The longer Johnson continues to play at a high level, the more pressing this question will become.
