After losing two key defensive players to free agency on Monday, the Las Vegas Raiders made a major defensive move by reportedly signing safety Jeremy Chinn from the Washington Commanders.
Chinn has agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal with the Raiders, including around $12 million in guaranteed money, according to Fox Sports.
This signing replaces safety Tre’von Moehrig, who had been with the Raiders but signed a three-year, $51 million deal with the Carolina Panthers earlier in the day. Additionally, Raiders middle linebacker Robert Spillane signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract with the New England Patriots.
With these departures, the Raiders needed to act quickly, and Chinn was their top target.
While Chinn may not be quite as strong a player as Moehrig, he’s still a solid addition. Like Moehrig, Chinn was one of the top safeties available in a strong free-agent class at the position. Known for his versatility, Chinn was used as a hybrid linebacker for the Commanders in 2024, where he enjoyed a strong season.
According to PFF, Chinn’s 138 defensive stops are the second-most among safeties over the past five seasons.
Chinn, 27, was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. He played on a one-year contract with Washington in 2024, recording a career-high 117 tackles. Washington runs a defensive scheme similar to that of the Raiders under head coach Pete Carroll, with former Carroll assistant Dan Quinn leading their defense.
The Raiders’ defense has some notable big safeties, with Chinn standing at 6-3 and weighing 220 pounds. Isaiah Pola-Moa, who is expected to be the starting free safety, is also tall at 6-4 and weighs 205 pounds.
