Tom Brady is reportedly eyeing a Super Bowl-winning quarterback to potentially become the Las Vegas Raiders’ next signal caller, according to a new report from The Las Vegas Review-Journal. Brady, who holds a significant minority stake in the Raiders, has allegedly reached out to Matthew Stafford, who is allowed by the Los Angeles Rams to explore trade options with other teams.
Stafford, 37, has two more seasons left on his contract but is said to be seeking a new deal with more guaranteed money. Apart from the Raiders, there are other teams potentially interested in Stafford, including the New York Jets, New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, and Indianapolis Colts.
The Raiders also have other options at quarterback, including free agents like Sam Darnold from the Minnesota Vikings or one of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterbacks, Russell Wilson or Justin Fields. Additionally, upcoming NFL Draft prospects like Cam Ward of Miami, Shedeur Sanders from Colorado, Quinn Ewers of Texas, and Kyle McCord from Syracuse are being considered for the position.
However, the idea of Stafford joining the Raiders remains uncertain, as several steps would need to occur. Brady, majority owner Mark Davis, head coach Pete Carroll, and general manager John Spytek would need to convince Stafford to join, then negotiate a new contract with him. Moreover, the Rams would have to agree to a trade, which could prove difficult given Stafford’s Super Bowl success.
While neither Carroll nor Spytek discussed Stafford at the scouting combine, Spytek stated that the Raiders are always looking to add valuable players to their roster.
The Raiders currently have quarterbacks Aidan O’Connell, Gardner Minshew, and Carter Bradley under contract for 2025, though it’s unlikely all three will remain with the team through the off-season.
Not everyone believes Stafford will be on the move. Some reports suggest he will stay with the Rams, who were competitive in the 2024 season, finishing with a 10-7 record and almost defeating the Super Bowl-winning Eagles in the playoffs. Despite throwing fewer touchdowns than in previous seasons, Stafford was efficient and avoided interceptions. He also played through injuries, including cracked ribs, which his wife Kelly revealed on a podcast.
