The San Francisco 49ers’ 2025 offseason just became more intriguing. Putting aside discussions about Brock Purdy’s contract for now, it seemed like the 49ers would have a quiet offseason, with limited options for major moves in free agency or trades. Although they can likely keep key players like Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga, the prospects of making big moves seemed unlikely, even with $50 million in cap space. However, one 49ers Pro Bowler is now pushing for the team to acquire a perennial Defensive Player of the Year contender.
49ers Star Pushes for DPOY Candidate
During the NFL’s Divisional Round playoffs, San Francisco cornerback Deommodore Lenoir took to social media, expressing his desire for the team to acquire Maxx Crosby, a defensive lineman for the Las Vegas Raiders. His post sparked immediate discussions among fans, many of whom supported the idea.
While the 49ers have other priorities, such as improving the interior offensive line or finding a dominant defensive tackle, the thought of Crosby playing alongside Nick Bosa is exciting.
Crosby, a former fourth-round pick of the Raiders, has established himself as one of the league’s top edge rushers. With three seasons of double-digit sacks, he ranks sixth in sacks in 2019—just behind Bosa. Additionally, Crosby has forced nine fumbles and tallied 423 total pressures over his six-year career, making him one of the most formidable players in the league.
Lenoir’s comments aren’t the first time Crosby has been linked to the 49ers. Due to general manager John Lynch’s history of making bold moves, Crosby’s name has surfaced in trade rumors before. While a trade never materialized, Crosby has expressed concerns about his future with the Raiders.
Crosby Open to a Trade?
In an appearance on Good Morning Football, Crosby addressed the trade rumors involving him. “Yeah, I see all those things,” Crosby said. “Right now, I am just focusing on my process and getting healthy. We will see what happens with the coaching situation. I’ve been with the Raiders for six years, and I’m under contract. I have no guaranteed money left, so there’s a lot to discuss.”
Crosby added that he’s happy but remains determined to win a Super Bowl. If the Raiders enter another rebuild, trading Crosby could benefit both sides, especially if the 49ers are involved.
Acquiring Crosby would not come cheap, with the asking price likely starting at a first-round pick. However, with the 11th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the 49ers can afford to be aggressive. It’s worth noting that when the 49ers last picked outside the top ten, they traded up to select Trey Lance.
Unlike Lance, Crosby is a proven star who could help the 49ers win now. If San Francisco is serious about capitalizing on their championship window, pursuing Crosby should be a top consideration.
Crosby’s contract runs through 2026, with an owed salary of $42.8 million. However, with no guaranteed money left, it’s a more manageable commitment. The 49ers could also extend Crosby and restructure his deal to reduce his 2025 and 2026 cap hits.
If there’s one move the 49ers should consider this offseason, it’s trading for Maxx Crosby. He’s a game-changer who would complement Nick Bosa and could propel the 49ers to the next level.
