Following the loss of outfielder Juan Soto to free agency, the New York Yankees made many moves to improve their squad. However, the departure of second baseman Gleyber Torres leaves a huge vacuum in the infield. Could general manager Brian Cashman fill it by trading for Ke’Bryan Hayes, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ third baseman?
While X user MLB Scoops claimed Hayes wanted a trade out of Pittsburgh, multiple Pirates insiders have denied the idea. That didn’t stop ESPN New York radio host and YES Network commentator Michael Kay from analyzing Hayes’ potential fit in the Bronx.
“Something has happened that I think solves a problem for the Yanks,” Kay remarked on Thursday. “Charlie Hayes’ son, Ke’Bryan Hayes, who is bound to a long-term, very reasonable contract with the Pirates, has requested to be traded. Ke’Bryan Hayes is a defensive whiz at third base. His hitting isn’t what it should be, but he’s clearly unhappy in Pittsburgh.
“I spoke with Charlie when the Yankees were in Pittsburgh a few years ago, and he was scratching his head about some of the stuff they do in Pittsburgh with hitters, whatever the case may be. And now it is revealed that Ke’Bryan has demanded a trade. If I’m the Yankees, I’ll contact the Pirates and ask, ‘What do you want?'”
Kay went on to suggest that he does not believe New York would make any substantial moves unless it can find a trade partner for starting pitcher Marcus Stroman. However, he concludes his argument by claiming Hayes “solves a lot of problems” for the Yankees, who are in need of another infielder.
Hayes will be 28 years old in the 2025 season. He received a Gold Glove Award in 2023 and is currently in the middle of an eight-year, $70 million contract. He’s under contract through at least the 2029 season.
