From an outsider’s perspective, wide receiver seemed like a major area of need for the Las Vegas Raiders heading into the 2025 NFL Draft. The team clearly felt the same, selecting two wide receivers and a quarterback they intend to convert into one.
But their efforts didn’t stop with the draft—they also aggressively targeted the position in undrafted free agency. Among the notable signings was former Illinois wideout Zakhari Franklin.
Franklin was a surprising omission from the draft. He began his college career at UTSA, where he posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2021 and 2022. His success prompted a move to Ole Miss, but his stint there was hampered by limited playing time—just four games with four receptions for 38 yards.
He later transferred to Illinois, where he had a more productive season, totaling 55 receptions for 652 yards.
While Franklin may not be the most athletic receiver, he has reliable hands and excels at gaining yards after the catch. At 24, he’s an older rookie, but his maturity and experience could work to his advantage compared to younger prospects.
Given the Raiders’ relatively thin receiver corps, Franklin has a real chance to secure a roster spot if he impresses during the offseason. At the very least, he’s a strong candidate for the practice squad.
