San Antonio Spurs legend Gregg Popovich was transported by ambulance from a local restaurant Tuesday night after officials received a call about an elderly person who had “fainted” during dinner, TMZ Sports reports.
Video footage shows the 76-year-old on a stretcher being placed into an emergency vehicle outside a San Antonio steakhouse around 8:20 PM.
Sources tell us that Popovich, who had been dealing with the aftereffects of a mild stroke he experienced in early November, had been at the restaurant for nearly two hours before the medical incident occurred.
Authorities responded to the scene after the fainting call, and Popovich was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening condition.
An additional source stated that Popovich was alert and speaking when he was loaded into the ambulance. He has since returned home and is recovering.
Popovich has been stepping back from coaching the Spurs to focus on his health, with assistant Mitch Johnson acting as interim head coach in his place. In February, it was confirmed that Popovich would not return for the rest of the season.
Considered one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, Popovich led the Spurs to five NBA championships and coached Team USA to a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He holds the record for the most wins as an NBA coach.
