The Detroit Lions already have one of the NFL’s most dangerous wide receiver duos in Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, but might they be planning something even bolder?
According to a recent Pro Football Network article, the Lions could be a dark horse to sign free agency Keenan Allen, the former Chargers and Bears Pro Bowl wide receiver who, unexpectedly, is still on the market.
Let us be honest: this would be a surprising move. Not because Allen would be ineffective, but because the Lions do not appear to be in need of a wide receiver on paper. But PFN made a convincing case.
“The concept is that (for the proper price), if some is nice, more is better. The Lions are in win-now mentality and will be searching for offensive steadiness as Ben Johnson moves to Chicago.”
That is fair. With Ben Johnson out, Dan Campbell and the new offensive brain trust may want to give Jared Goff as many weapons as possible as they prepare to take the next step in 2025.
There’s still something left in the tank
Allen, although turning 32, shown in 2024 that he is far from washed. Despite a difficult season with the Bears, he still managed 744 yards and seven touchdowns.
For a Lions club with a Super Bowl window open, signing a dependable veteran like Allen to a short-term, team-friendly contract could be a wise decision. He’d add veteran experience, outstanding route running, and a reliable pair of hands, which would be especially useful in crucial playoff moments.
Does It Make Sense for the Lions?
Maybe. But let’s not deny the facts: Detroit’s wide receiver depth isn’t what it appears beyond St. Brown and Jamo. While they each accumulated more than 2,300 yards last year, the choices after them are less proven.
If Allen’s price tag comes down, signing him could give the Lions one of the most dynamic, dangerous receiving corps in sport — and offer Goff a safety net if injuries strike or Williams hits a hiccup in year three.
Bottom Line
Do not rule it out. If Detroit wants to keep the pressure on NFC contenders and put the finishing touches on an excellent offense, Keenan Allen might be the surprise move that propels them to the top.
