During a charity concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London this past weekend, Roger Daltrey, the lead singer for the iconic band ‘The Who’, revealed he is facing several health challenges.
According to The Sun, Daltrey announced to the crowd that he is losing both his hearing and his sight. Daltrey drew uncanny parallels to his own problems by sarcastically referring the band’s 1969 rock opera Tommy, which tells the tale of a youngster who is deaf, stupid and blind.
“The joys of aging include losing your hearing, and now, I also get to experience the pleasure of losing my sight,” Daltrey told the Royal Albert Hall crowd. “Luckily, I still have my voice, so I’m only missing one part of Tommy.”
Daltrey has previously commented about his hearing impairments. According to Deadline, Daltrey remarked onstage in 2018 that years of exposure to intense concert noise had resulted in substantial hearing damage and recommended fans to use earplugs to protect their ears. However, he could not indicate when his vision difficulties started.
Daltrey, 81, continues to perform with guitarist Pete Townshend, who is 79. They are known for creating singles including “My Generation,” “Baba O’Riley,” “Behind Blue Eyes,” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” The Who were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
