The Seattle Seahawks traded Geno Smith and DK Metcalf this offseason, but it appears the team tried to trade both Pro Bowlers in a large-scale deal. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Seahawks were interested in acquiring a four-time Pro Bowler. Before sending Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third-round pick, Seattle reportedly tried to land Maxx Crosby from the Raiders.
Breer shared in a March 12, 2025 article titled “Takeaways: Inside the Josh Allen and Maxx Crosby Deals” that the Seahawks proposed sending Smith and Metcalf to Las Vegas in exchange for Crosby. However, the Raiders rejected the proposal, making it clear Crosby was not available.
Instead, the Seahawks traded both veterans for draft picks, rather than securing the star pass rusher. Breer had earlier reported that Seattle attempted to trade for Crosby by offering Smith and Metcalf, but the Raiders quickly declined and made it known Crosby wasn’t up for grabs. Eventually, the talks led to Geno Smith joining the Raiders.
Maxx Crosby, a four-time Pro Bowler, signed a three-year, $106.5 million extension this offseason that runs through 2029. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald likely would have loved to use Crosby on the defensive line.
After being turned down for Crosby, Seattle shifted its focus and sought replacements for both Metcalf and Smith. The team traded Metcalf and signed Sam Darnold in free agency to replace Smith.
As for Smith, the Seahawks and the quarterback couldn’t agree on a contract extension. General manager John Schneider explained in a March 13 radio show that the team made a strong offer but was prepared for a counteroffer that never came. Without a deal, they had to move forward with what was best for the team.
Seattle could part ways with Sam Darnold as soon as 2026. Darnold’s three-year, $100 million contract allows the Seahawks to release him after one season for $37.5 million if needed. This flexibility makes the switch from Smith to Darnold a logical move, especially since Smith was reportedly seeking a much higher salary than Darnold’s contract, which could lead the Seahawks to look for another quarterback option in the near future.
