The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing some important free-agent decisions this summer, with one player taking priority in their plans.
According to NHL insider Nick Kypreos of the Toronto Star, the Maple Leafs’ top priority is re-signing Mitch Marner or securing another star forward. Kypreos also notes that John Tavares and Steven Lorentz will have to wait for new contract offers until Marner’s situation is resolved, whether he stays or leaves.
Kypreos mentioned, “It seems like pending unrestricted free agents John Tavares and Steven Lorentz will have to wait until the off-season for new contract offers from the Leafs if they are to remain.” He added, “Toronto’s top priority remains creating enough space to either retain Mitch Marner or acquire one or two players to replace him.”
Tavares has been an essential member of the Maple Leafs since joining the team in 2018. Named captain in 2019, he held the role until 2024. He is currently in the final year of his seven-year, $77 million contract with Toronto.
It’s surprising that Tavares is not a top priority for the Leafs, especially given his strong performance this season. He has impressed with 32 goals, 33 assists, and 65 points in 64 games.
Tavares Expresses Desire for Extension
As he enters the final year of his contract, Tavares hopes to sign an extension with the Maple Leafs. Before the March 7 NHL Trade Deadline, Tavares expressed his desire to get a deal done, although he acknowledged the team’s focus was elsewhere.
“I certainly would love to get it done,” Tavares said. “But obviously, the club has a lot going on. It’s not just about me. I know management will do what they need to at that time of year. If we have the chance to get it done, I’d love that. If not, we’ll deal with it when the time comes. I’m just focused on continuing my journey here as a Leaf, and I want it to extend past this season.”
While Tavares is eager for an extension, his primary focus is on helping the Leafs win the Stanley Cup and bring it back to his hometown.
Maple Leafs Coach Praises Tavares’ Focus
Tavares has been a crucial player and leader for Toronto this season, despite being in the final year of his contract. Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube praised his professionalism, stating that the star forward isn’t distracted by his contract situation.
“He’s a pro. He just comes to work, sticks to his routine, and plays extremely well for us,” Berube said. “I haven’t noticed him thinking about it at all.”
Currently, the Maple Leafs are 43-25-3 and leading the Atlantic Division.
