The Minnesota Vikings lost Sam Darnold in free agency, but J.J. McCarthy is beginning his official rookie season. Minnesota, on the other hand, may be looking at Ryan Tannehill as a backup plan for McCarthy.
This was initially reported by SI’s Albert Breer. The move would make sense and allow the Vikings some leeway. While McCarthy has made significant progress in his rehabilitation, having a solid backup is critical.
Not to mention, Tannehill can start if necessary. Furthermore, in head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system, every quarterback has prospered. It would not be shocking to include Tannehill on the list.
Regardless, the former Tennessee Titans quarterback has not made an official start since the 2023 season. That year, he and rookie Will Levis were battling for the position.
Meanwhile, Tannehill lost the battle with Levis and has since become a free agent. It may be risky, but there is a high floor with the former Pro Bowler.
He played alongside AJ Brown, an exceptional wide receiver, and Derrick Henry, a running back. Under O’Connell, he will be able to work with a more explosive and dynamic offense. The writing might be on the wall.
Would the Vikings pursue Ryan Tannehill?
It’s conceivable that the latter still has some gas in its tank. One bad season does not excuse not being on an NFL roster. However, the game is evolving.
It’s transitioning from pocket passers to dual-threat quarterbacks. Tannehill has shown some quickness with his legs, but it is not his strongest suit.
