The Cleveland Browns have a huge decision to make with the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. While some believe they’ll target Cam Ward or trade down, reports have circulated this week that they’re in love with Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
Sanders is unquestionably one of the best passers in this draft. He had a tremendous year in 2024, throwing for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns while completing 74% of his throws. Teams are enthused about his ability to read defenses, remain poised under pressure, and make NFL-level throws.
But is Cleveland a good fit? Some others, including perhaps Myles Garrett, have hinted at the Browns’ rising interest in Sanders. The team’s current quarterback position is hazy, with Deshaun Watson’s ailments and poor play putting the club in limbo. Drafting Sanders may be a fresh start, but it would also require moving on from Watson’s enormous deal, which is easier said than done.
Personally, I believe Sanders will go elsewhere. The New York Giants and the Las Vegas Raiders both need quarterbacks and appear to be better matches. If the Browns pass, the Giants, who have the third pick, might take him. The Raiders, who pick sixth, might trade up if they see him as their guy.
So, will Cleveland actually draft Sanders at No. 2? I don’t see Sanders integrating into the blue-collar Cleveland community. But it will be a gamble.
If they believe he is their future franchise quarterback, the risk is worthwhile.
