After missing the whole 2024 NFL season, former Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill intends to rebuild his career this offseason. If one report is correct, he could land that opportunity with the Minnesota Vikings.
According to Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports, “The Vikings have had discussions with former (Tennessee Titans) quarterback Ryan Tannehill about a potential deal.” Talks are still ongoing, and nothing is imminent as of now.”
The Dolphins selected Tannehill in the first round (No. 8 overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft. He concluded his six-year Dolphins career with 20,434 passing yards and 123 touchdown passes, ranking third in franchise history behind Hall of Famers Dan Marino and Bob Griese.
After displaying flashes of brilliance but ultimately failing to live up to his first-round status, Tannehill was moved to the highest bidder. The Dolphins sent Tannehill and a 2019 sixth-round pick to the Titans in exchange for a 2020 fourth-round pick and a 2019 seventh-round pick.
The concluding statement in this current article, “nothing is imminent,” casts doubt on this marriage’s ability to come together quickly, although the match works for both parties. The Vikings need a seasoned quarterback to complement J.J. McCarthy, but they do not want a true quarterback competition in camp.
For Tannehill, becoming McCarthy’s mentor would lengthen his tenure in the NFL. He would pass it on to the next generation of quarterbacks, knowing that he is only one injury or slow start away from being Minnesota’s starting quarterback.
However, Tannehill must swallow his pride and accept his status as a backup quarterback in this league. He couldn’t accept it last season, hanging out for a starting spot that never materialized. Perhaps a year off altered his outlook.
