Charlie Morton will start the season’s second game against the Blue Jays on March 28 in Toronto. Two-thirds of the rotation has been confirmed.

Zach Eflin will start the Opening Day game on March 27. Dean Kremer and Tomoyuki Sugano, who pitch tonight, will be positioned further down.

Morton, 41, has thrown six scoreless innings across three spring starts. He signed a $15 million contract in January and is now in his 18th major league season.

“He’s been everything,” manager Brandon Hyde stated. “He’s already had an incredible impact on our team. Just by his relationships with men. He throws the ball incredibly effectively and looks terrific. That’s only Charlie Morton.

“The material he’s thrown out each time has been pretty fantastic. “He’s already contributed significantly to our team.”

Shortstop Gunnar Henderson worked out again today and did batting practice, but he has not played since February 27 due to a strained right intercostal. After tonight, four exhibition games remain, including one on Monday afternoon in Washington, DC.

“We’re still hopeful, but we are running out of time right now,” Hyde told the audience. “We haven’t made a final decision on that.”

If Henderson isn’t ready, Livan Soto could move on to Toronto. He’s 15 for 37 (.405) with a.990 OPS in 15 games and can play shortstop. Vimael Machín’s preferred position is second base.

Félix Bautista hasn’t played since Friday’s game against the Twins, but he has thrown in the backfield. His situation is likewise questionable.

When asked if he is confident that Bautista will be on the Opening Day roster, Hyde replied, “No.”

“We’re still talking about our roster,” Hyde said. “We haven’t solidified anything there yet.”

A third bullpen position may become available if Bautista is removed and Albert Suárez replaces Grayson Rodriguez in the rotation. Andrew Kittredge will be placed on the injured list and could miss at least two months after undergoing cartilage repair surgery on his left knee.

Rodriguez played catch for the second time, following up on Tuesday’s flat-ground practice.

Corner infielder Emmanuel Rivera said his left shoulder is feeling better, but he is still unable to play. He was not anticipated to make the team, and he is out of alternatives.

Sugano’s relievers tonight are Keegan Akin, Matt Bowman, and Seranthony Domínguez.

Eflin will make his final exhibition start against the Pirates in Bradenton on Saturday afternoon, facing Paul Skenes once more.
