Recently, there were rumors that Quinn Ewers was considering returning to college for the 2025 season to lead the Texas Longhorns and potentially earn more NIL money. However, after declaring for the NFL Draft and competing at the Scouting Combine, Ewers is now focusing on his future at the professional level. A source within the Dallas Cowboys organization has told CowboysCountry.com that “America’s Team” might be interested in him as well.
When asked about his confidence, Ewers said, “I think I’m the best [in the class] and the most ready for the NFL because of what I’ve been through.” As for the Cowboys’ scouting department, they are described as “intrigued” by Ewers, with indications that Dallas holds a strong opinion of him as a “targeted” prospect.
Does Ewers believe he stands out among top prospects like Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, both projected as top-10 picks? Ewers thinks so. “I think I’m the most ready for the situations that occur in the NFL—injuries, playing through them, handling pressure with a big name, staying confident even after being benched,” he explained. “It’s hard to do…”
Ewers’ college journey has been full of ups and downs, which some scouts might find impressive. A former top high school recruit from Southlake High School in the DFW area, Ewers started his college career with just two snaps at Ohio State. After transferring to Texas, he led the Longhorns to two College Football Playoff semifinal appearances in three years as a starter, all while dealing with criticism. Despite making his mark in the Texas record books and restoring national prominence to the program, he has faced harsh labels, such as being injury-prone, immobile, and a poor decision-maker. Nonetheless, he has kept his focus on his NFL aspirations.
“I just wanted to give them an idea of who I am,” Ewers said about his Combine meetings. “Because I’m sure they hear a lot of different things about me, and most of it’s hearsay or just not true.”
Despite off-field opinions, Ewers remains a highly intriguing prospect with NFL-ready arm talent and extensive high-level experience. He played through injury for most of the 2024 season, throwing for 3,472 yards and 31 touchdowns for Texas, finishing his career third in passing yards among legendary Longhorn quarterbacks.
Ewers is also working with former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, who is helping him prepare for the NFL Draft. Additionally, Ewers has a personal connection to the Cowboys through former Longhorns receiver Paxton Anderson, who is also Jerry Jones’ grandson and Charlotte’s son.
The Cowboys have expressed interest in selecting a “developmental” quarterback this year, which suggests they may not use their No. 12 overall pick on one. It remains to be seen whether the Cowboys will use their second-round pick (No. 44) to select Ewers. After pitching his case to multiple teams at the Combine, Ewers is waiting to see which NFL franchise believes in him as much as he believes in himself. From the sound of it, the Dallas Cowboys may be at the top of that list.
