With Kevin Zeitler recently departing for the Tennessee Titans, the Detroit Lions now face the challenge of finding his replacement at guard. Christian Mahogany showed some promising potential during his limited 2024 playing time, giving Detroit an encouraging internal option to step up. However, it’s anticipated that the team may also look to bring in an experienced veteran to compete for the starting position.
Concerns Surrounding Graham Glasgow
Detroit’s offensive line has additional concerns, particularly regarding Graham Glasgow. Signed through 2026, Glasgow struggled last season, raising questions about whether he’s entering the decline of his career. The Lions should plan ahead and prepare for a smooth transition to a younger, more capable replacement when necessary.
A Potential Solution: Dylan Fairchild from Georgia
To address these needs, Jacob Infante of Pro Football Network suggests that the Lions could select Georgia guard Dylan Fairchild with their compensatory third-round pick. Fairchild comes with an impressive college resume, having been a starter for Georgia’s dominant offensive line over the past two seasons and part of their back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022.
Infante describes Fairchild as “an athletic interior lineman with quick feet and a high football IQ,” adding that the Lions’ established offensive line could be the perfect environment for his development. During his time at Georgia, Fairchild was exceptionally reliable, allowing only one sack, one quarterback hit, and 12 hurries in two years.
Patience May Be Key
Although Fairchild may need some time to develop, the Lions are in a strong position to be patient. With Mahogany and Glasgow currently expected to start in 2025, Detroit can afford to bring Fairchild along gradually, ensuring he’s ready when the opportunity arises. This strategic move would help secure the future of the Lions’ offensive line and provide long-term stability.
