The Denver Broncos are continuing to surround quarterback Bo Nix with as many offensive weapons as possible this offseason.

They recently signed former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Evan Engram to a two-year contract to boost their passing game, and Engram could potentially fill the “joker” role that head coach Sean Payton has been seeking.

Given the moves the Broncos have made in free agency, it’s clear they’re likely to target one or two running backs in the NFL Draft.

Luca Evans of The Denver Post reports that the Broncos are sending scouts to Kansas’ Pro Day to evaluate standout running back Devin Neal. The Broncos have already met with Neal at both the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine, and now they’ll get a closer look. At the Combine, Neal mentioned that he models his game after former Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook.

Neal started all four seasons at Kansas and showed continuous improvement each year. In 2023, he rushed for 1,280 yards, averaging 6.3 yards per carry, and scored 16 touchdowns along with one receiving touchdown.

In the previous season, Neal rushed for 1,266 yards and found the end zone 16 times, adding another touchdown reception.

While Neal may not be the best fit for the “joker” role in Payton’s offense due to his limited receiving ability—he caught just 49 passes in 25 games over the past two seasons—he has proven himself as a strong rusher. His best game last season came against Colorado, where he rushed for 207 yards and scored four total touchdowns.

If the Broncos miss out on Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty or North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton, they may opt for the best available player and select a running back like Neal in the middle rounds.

As ESPN’s Jordan Reid pointed out on a media call, “I think we could see over 30 running backs drafted this year,” underscoring the depth of this running back class. It’s clear the Broncos will prioritize adding offensive talent early in the NFL Draft.
