The New York Mets delivered disappointing injury news on Sunday regarding starting catcher Francisco Alvarez. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that Alvarez needs surgery for a broken left hamate bone.
The Mets later confirmed that Alvarez’s surgery went “as expected,” according to Tim Healey of Newsday Sports. He is expected to be out for six to eight weeks, meaning he will miss the beginning of the regular season.
The 2025 season will mark Alvarez’s third full year with the Mets. He made an immediate impact in 2023, posting a .209/.284/.437 slash line with 25 home runs and 63 RBI over 123 games. His power was especially valuable for a team looking to strengthen its lineup, although he wasn’t as much of a home run threat in 2024.
At 23, Alvarez is considered one of baseball’s top young catchers and remains a key player for the Mets. Despite dealing with injuries last season, he hit 11 home runs in 308 at-bats and drove in 47 runs as the Mets reached the NLCS.
Alvarez made a strong debut in 2023, hitting 25 home runs and driving in 63 RBI in 123 games. He is expected to join Pete Alonso, Juan Soto, and Mark Vientos to form the core of the Mets’ lineup. With Soto’s addition and Alonso’s return, the Mets were built to contend for a World Series, but early injuries have set them back.
