The Green Bay Packers’ free agency activity is picking up after a slow start. Earlier on Monday, they made their first external signing, bringing in 49ers offensive lineman Aaron Banks on a four-year, $77 million deal. This move follows the re-signings of kicker Brandon McManus and linebacker Isaiah McDuffie before the legal tampering period began today.
The Packers missed out on some of the bigger free-agent targets, with players like Myles Garrett, Maxx Crosby, Tee Higgins, and DK Metcalf all off the market. Meanwhile, Khalil Mack and Chris Godwin both decided to stay with their respective teams.
While the Packers didn’t make a headline-grabbing move, they took a step into the market late Monday by signing a cornerback for their secondary.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Green Bay has agreed to a 4-year, $48 million deal with Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs. This signing follows a series of secondary moves across the league, including the Lions’ acquisition of Carlton Davis III, the Jets’ DJ Reed replacing Davis in Detroit, and Vikings safety Cam Bynum joining the Colts.
Hobbs will join a Packers secondary that is dealing with uncertainty regarding the potential departure of Jaire Alexander. The addition of Hobbs might allow the Packers to cut Alexander without sacrificing depth at cornerback.
One of the reasons Green Bay is considering moving on from Alexander is his injury history. Unfortunately, Hobbs has had his own injury issues, missing 16 games over the past three seasons, including six in 2024. He recorded one interception last season, bringing his career total to three.
According to PFF, Hobbs ranked 110th out of 223 cornerbacks last season, with an overall grade of 61.4. In Green Bay, he’ll join Keisean Nixon as the top two cornerbacks on the roster, while free-agent corners Eric Stokes and Corey Ballentine remain unsigned.
