The Green Bay Packers are looking to strengthen their defensive line after struggling to pressure opposing quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL season. ESPN projects that they will be active in free agency, with a potential four-year, $72 million offer, including $24 million in guaranteed money, to Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowl edge rusher Josh Sweat. This move would help the Packers add a veteran pass rusher to their defense, as they aim for contention in the 2025 season.
Sweat, who had a standout 2024 season with eight sacks, nine tackles for loss, and 15 quarterback hits, boosted his value further with a strong Super Bowl performance, recording 2.5 sacks. At 27 years old, Sweat would fit well alongside the Packers’ young defensive players, such as Rashan Gary and Kenny Clark.
However, the Packers may prioritize adding defensive line help on the interior or consider addressing edge-rushing needs through the NFL draft, potentially with the No. 23 overall pick. If they decide to pursue a veteran, Sweat remains an appealing option.
Aside from Sweat, other potential free-agent pass rushers, including Malcolm Koonce, Dayo Odeyingbo, and Chase Young, could be more affordable alternatives. Additionally, veterans like Khalil Mack or DeMarcus Lawrence could offer experience on shorter contracts. The Packers have around $46 million in cap space for the 2025 season, providing them with flexibility in their approach.
