The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be ready to reshape their quarterback situation in 2025, with a variety of veterans available in free agency. As free agency approaches, it seems that Justin Fields and Russell Wilson will also be on the market.
Both players exceeded expectations in 2024, proving their worth after being acquired at low cost and making head coach Mike Tomlin look like a savvy decision-maker. However, as Steelers fans have come to expect, the quarterback play faltered late in the season. Wilson led the team through a four-game losing streak and was then overwhelmed in the Wild Card Round.
This leaves Pittsburgh at a pivotal point, where they may have to sacrifice stability in favor of taking another chance.
As a result, the Steelers quarterbacks have emerged as potential targets for the Las Vegas Raiders, especially after the recent Matthew Stafford deal.
“With Matthew Stafford staying with the Rams, the Las Vegas Raiders are now expected to explore veteran quarterback options, including Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Sam Darnold, according to sources,” reported Adam Schefter.
The Rams managed to retain Stafford after weeks of trade rumors, during which Pittsburgh was involved in speculation, and Las Vegas actively pursued the quarterback. Stafford reportedly met with Raiders owner Tom Brady in Montana (though details about the meeting vary), but ultimately, the Rams were able to offer him a restructured deal that included a raise.
Both Wilson and Fields make sense for the Raiders for different reasons. Wilson is now seen as a bridge quarterback, capable of holding the position as a competent player willing to take risks downfield. His connection with head coach Pete Carroll makes him an appealing option for the Raiders, a traditional Steelers rival.
On the other hand, Fields offers more long-term potential than Wilson. He performed well enough to secure a starting role, with a 4-2 record before being benched. If the Raiders want to take a chance like the Steelers did and pursue a late career resurgence before looking for a rookie quarterback in 2026, Fields could provide enough playmaking to keep the team competitive.
