On Thursday, long-time San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich spoke publicly for the first time since suffering a mild stroke in November. He emphasized that while his players have shown resilience during a tough season, his health and recovery remain his top priority.
Popovich also confirmed that he would not be returning this season but hopes to resume coaching in the future once his health allows.
A key detail, often overlooked, suggests Popovich’s eventual return to the Spurs in some capacity.
Throughout his career, Popovich has coached numerous NBA legends like David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Kawhi Leonard. However, the Spurs added rising star Victor Wembanyama two summers ago, and Popovich is eager to help guide his development into a future all-time great.
Brian Windhorst of ESPN pointed out that when Wembanyama signed a five-year extension in 2023, it sent a clear message that Popovich would remain as the coach for the foreseeable future. While Popovich has the option to opt out of his contract anytime, his recent comments suggest he plans to continue coaching for now.
With Popovich aiming to return to the sidelines, the Spurs have time to decide on their coaching future. Windhorst speculated that the team might need to consider a coach-in-waiting, especially if Popovich remains in his president role and maintains decision-making authority.
This season, Mitch Johnson has been filling in as head coach with mixed results. While he’s shown potential, it’s evident he’s not yet the legendary figure Spurs fans are used to.
