Overview: The Raiders endured a challenging season, their first and only full one under head coach Antonio Pierce. Despite winning two of their last three games, they suffered a 10-game losing streak and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year.
Consistency, particularly at quarterback, was a major struggle. Due to injuries and poor performance, the team cycled through Gardner Minshew II, Aidan O’Connell, and Desmond Ridder. Player Status: The Raiders should aim to retain safety Moehrig, who had a standout season with 104 tackles and two interceptions. He has been among the league’s top 15 safeties in multiple categories. With several defensive starters leaving, keeping Moehrig would be a smart move.
Team Needs: In addition to defensive improvements, the Raiders need to focus on giving their new quarterback a solid supporting cast. They had the worst rushing offense in the league last season, averaging only 79.8 yards per game, so adding a veteran running back is crucial. A proven wide receiver to complement tight end Brock Bowers would also be beneficial. Additionally, bolstering the offensive line is important.
Financial Situation: The Raiders have $95 million in cap space, the second-most in the league, behind only the New England Patriots.
Potential Cuts:
- QB Gardner Minshew II: With Minshew set to count $14 million against the cap, the Raiders are likely to part ways with him as they transition to a new quarterback.
- C Andre James: After losing his starting role to rookie Jackson Powers-Johnson, cutting James could save the Raiders over $3 million.
Draft Fit: The Raiders’ priority in the draft should be selecting a new franchise quarterback. After the departure of Derek Carr, the team has struggled to find stability at the position. Selecting a top quarterback prospect is essential for the franchise’s future.
