Former MLB All-Star closer Jonathan Papelbon has expressed concern about New York Yankees star Aaron Judge heading into the 2025 season. Judge struggled during the 2024 postseason, hitting just .184/.344/.408 with a .752 OPS in 14 games. While he did hit three home runs, his overall performance was disappointing. Despite the Yankees making it to the World Series, one has to wonder if Judge’s struggles impacted the team’s competitiveness in the Fall Classic, especially considering his previous MVP-level performances.
However, Judge has had successful regular seasons in the past, earning two American League MVP titles, including one in 2024. So why is Papelbon concerned? The former Boston Red Sox closer fears Judge’s postseason struggles may carry over into the 2025 regular season. “At the end of the day, all baseball players are mental,” Papelbon said in a recent appearance on Foul Territory. “We’re built that way, and we press. I’ve pressed, we all have. I think the pressure Judge felt in the playoffs will continue… I think he’s going to face much tougher pitching staffs in the AL East this year… Honestly, I think the struggles will continue.”
Papelbon’s bold prediction raises questions about Judge’s future performance. So, does he think Judge can rebound? “I think he’s going to have to find something else that motivates him,” Papelbon continued. “I know he’s a regular season player, but the first month will be very telling.”
When healthy, Judge has been a consistent performer in regular seasons in recent years, which should offer hope to Yankees fans. Despite Papelbon’s concerns, it’s clear that Judge has the potential to overcome adversity—though the next season could be a crucial test.
