Sam Garcia of the San Diego Padres on SI provided a couple of rumors that go into the Padres’ chances of acquiring previous 2019 All-Star catcher James McCann, as well as how they could overcome barriers to make such an addition possible:
According to Paul Kasabian of Bleacher Report, the Padres could also consider free agent All-Star catcher James McCann. To compensate for their tight spending budget, the Padres are allegedly exploring trade options. The Padres acquired a right-handed pitcher from the White Sox, while the Braves signed the Padres’ top free agent outfielder. The Twins are allegedly interested in trading for the Padres’ ace.
McCann would provide an offensive lift to the Padres.
McCann would improve the Padres’ depth behind the plate, as they have kept starting Luis Campusano but lost vital backup Kyle Higashioka to the Texas Rangers in December of 2024. In 2024, the former had a.234 batting average compared to the latter’s.216, and while playing in 26 fewer games, he tied Campusano for the most home runs with eight.
That, combined with his league accolades and last season’s.986 fielding %, makes him a fascinating candidate for San Diego to consider.
