The $97 million Pro Bowl cornerback, Marshon Lattimore, could be a potential cut candidate after the Washington Commanders finish their postseason run. Despite being traded to Washington midseason to strengthen their secondary, some reports suggest that the team might release Lattimore. Originally drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the former Ohio State standout became one of the top cornerbacks in the league, with 15 interceptions, five fumble recoveries, two touchdowns, and 409 tackles. The New Orleans Saints traded him to the Commanders, as they were not contenders in the playoffs this season.
The move worked out well for both parties, particularly with Lattimore’s performance in Washington. The Commanders, still in the midst of a rebuilding phase under new owner Josh Harris, have shown progress but need to think about long-term success. Letting go of the four-time Pro Bowler could be a smart decision for both sides, especially with the likelihood of drafting a new cornerback.
After releasing Emmanuel Forbes, the team may seek a healthier cornerback. Benjamin St-Juste looks promising as a long-term fixture in the secondary, but the team will need a veteran who can stay healthy for more than a season. While Lattimore isn’t currently injured, his past history shows that injuries can strike at inconvenient times.
Following a strong season in 2024, the Los Angeles Chargers are looking to make moves to contend for a championship, though they were knocked out in the wild card round. Their secondary is likely to change with cornerbacks like Kristian Fulton possibly leaving in free agency. The Chargers, who had to manage without key players like Marcus Maye and Elijah Molden, could look to bring in a veteran like Lattimore to strengthen their defense.
The Ravens also need to address their secondary, where Brandon Stephens has struggled. With potential changes to their roster, such as Marlon Humphrey being a rumored departure, signing Lattimore could be a worthwhile move for Baltimore to bolster their defense for a consistent playoff push.
The Kansas City Chiefs, facing an offseason of financial challenges, may need to get creative with their spending. As they lose several key players, including safety Justin Reid, adding a veteran like Lattimore could help alongside promising cornerback Trent McDuffie. While Steven Nelson might be a short-term fix, Lattimore could provide long-term stability and mentorship for the young secondary.
