On Saturday night, the Washington Commanders went on the road and astonished the football world, beating the Detroit Lions 45-31.
The victory not only advanced Washington to its first championship game in three decades, but also established quarterback Jayden Daniels as one of the best players in the sport, regardless of experience. It also eliminated the Lions, who were the top seed, from the playoffs.
The Ford Field faithful were in disbelief. Head coach Dan Campbell joined them to start the season and addressed the team’s costly turnovers.
“Yeah, I don’t know, I’m not sure what it was,” Campbell told reporters following the game. “It was one of those odd days. Things were off, and it wasn’t just one thing. It’s kind of how the day went. That has not been our approach. We just didn’t play great, man. … Ultimately, I didn’t have them ready. “We didn’t get it done…”
It’s hard, man. When you lose these games, man … It’s like the players; you know what they put in. Lot of people don’t know what they go through. You have to get up, body beat to (crap), and mentally stay locked in and accomplish those things. So, lengthy season.
Quarterback Jared Goff threw three interceptions in the Divisional Round, two of which jeopardized Detroit’s hopes. He also fumbled late in the first quarter, leading to a go-ahead touchdown.
Perhaps the most agonizing of all was the interception by receiver Jameson Williams. All season long, Detroit’s trick plays garnered them acclaim and additional yards. On Saturday, it derailed the Lions’ season.
