Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian has agreed to a contract extension to continue with the Longhorns, according to Brett McMurphy of Action Network. McMurphy also reported that the 50-year-old had previously turned down interviews with two NFL teams.
Sarkisian has been Texas’ head coach since 2021, compiling a 38-17 record, including a 25-5 mark over the past two seasons. Under his leadership, the Longhorns reached the College Football Playoff in 2023 and 2024, though they were eliminated in the semifinals both times.
Last year, Texas won the Big 12 Championship and earned a No. 3 seed in the CFP. This year, they reached the SEC Championship Game, securing the No. 5 seed, and defeated Clemson and Arizona State before falling to Ohio State. The Longhorns are the only team to appear in the CFP in both of the past two years.
Given Texas’ success in recent seasons, it’s no surprise that NFL teams showed interest in Sarkisian. His extensive coaching resume includes stints in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders (2004, quarterbacks coach) and Atlanta Falcons (2017-2018, offensive coordinator).
Despite the NFL interest, Sarkisian has shown strong commitment to Texas, as highlighted by a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, signaling his loyalty to the program.
The contract extension confirms it. It’s clear why Sarkisian is staying, considering the success he’s had in Austin. Texas clearly values him, given the Longhorns’ strong performance under his leadership.
Now, Sarkisian is committed long-term as he works to bring Texas its first national title since 2005.
