The Las Vegas Raiders have cast a wide net seeking for their next head coach. They interviewed both the Detroit Lions’ offensive and defensive coordinators, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn. They also chatted with Chiefs DC. Steve Spagnuolo, Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, and several more.
Johnson is one candidate rumored to be a top priority for several NFL teams. He’s been said to have a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars and is regarded as the league’s “worst-kept secret.”
However, while appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show,” former NFL great cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones stated that multiple sources have informed him that Johnson will be the Raiders’ head coach.
“Sources say Ben Johnson is going to be the Raiders coach–like really good sources,” Jones said with a big smile. “Like I’m talking about real good sources, as we shall say.”
Jones and McAfee met while playing college football at West Virginia, and the former cornerback has appeared on the show several times. The Tennessee Titans took Jones sixth overall in the 2005 NFL Draft.
NFL insider Adam Schefter stated earlier on Monday’s show with McAfee that he is “not in that camp” that believes Johnson would travel to Las Vegas.
“Why are people ignoring Chicago? “Why has that just been dispelled?” Schefter inquired.
Johnson has served as the Lions’ offensive coordinator since 2022. He joined the team’s coaching staff in 2019 alongside head coach Dan Campbell, progressing from offensive quality control coach to tight ends coach to passing game coordinator before taking on the OC post.
Despite the Carolina Panthers’ efforts to hire him as head coach before the 2023 season, Johnson elected to remain in Detroit.
He told Tim Twentyman on his Huddle podcast about his decision to stay in Detroit, “It starts with this place and these people. There are so many nice people, coaches, and athletes here. I adore the offensive staff and everyone we have on board. I adore the players. I adore coming into work every day. Coach Campbell is incredible. So, end of the day, talking with my family, it simply made sense. It made sense, don’t spoil a good thing.”
However, Johnson looks to have ultimately chosen to go on once the 2024 season ends.
